(KNSI) – The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a scammer that tried to pass themselves off as a corrections officer.

They targeted someone connected to a former inmate. The scammer demanded money from the victim. In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office says it will never cold call someone out of the blue and ask for payment. They advise the public to always be skeptical of an unexpected phone call from a stranger, regardless of their claimed position or reason for the call.

The office did not identify the person pulling the scam but referred to them as a criminal. No further information was given about a pending arrest.
