(KNSI) – The Minnesota GOP has introduced its own set of bills meant to ensure fraud scandals that have rocked state government in recent years are history.

The proposal comes about a week after anti-fraud measures were included in Democratic Governor Tim Walz’s latest budget. Republicans look to tackle the issue in three ways. Representative Patti Anderson is putting forward the first bill. It creates an Office of the Inspector General that oversees all state agencies and would force them to halt payments when fraud is suspected, not after a lengthy investigation.

Representative Ben Davis wrote House File 2. It also addresses reporting requirements and seeks to equip state agencies with more tools to help proactively prevent fraud. It emphasizes transparency.

The final bill, sponsored by Representative Jim Nash, looks at the issue from a legislative perspective. It will force any proposed bills to have a fraud note attached to them. The exercise will help lawmakers understand how the bill they are championing could aid fraud in the future. Whether it is vague language or the structure of new programs, potential red flags would be identified before something is passed into law.
