(KNSI) — The National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning in effect until noon on Tuesday.
A dangerous cold snap has central Minnesota in its icy grip, with wind chills expected to plummet as low as -41.
Forecasters say to stay indoors as much as possible, and for those who must go outside, wear multiple layers of clothing, including gloves, a hat, and a scarf, as exposed skin can experience frostbite in as little as 10 minutes due to the extreme cold. Keep pets indoors whenever possible and check on elderly family, friends, and neighbors to make sure they’re staying warm and have enough to eat so they don’t have to go out.
Fire safety experts recommend using portable heaters correctly, never using the oven to stay warm, and never operating generators or grills indoors.
The National Weather Service has replaced windchill warnings with extreme cold warnings to clarify that cold can be dangerous with or without wind. Forecasters say this addresses a common misconception that extreme cold is only associated with colder temperatures when there is wind.
Here’s the breakdown for the new language and phrasing:
Cold Weather Advisory: Be Aware. A Cold Weather Advisory is issued when seasonably cold air temperatures or wind chill values, but not extremely cold values, are expected or occurring. Be sure you and your loved ones dress appropriately and cover exposed skin when venturing outdoors.
Extreme Cold Watch: Be Prepared. An Extreme Cold Watch is issued when dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values are possible. As with a Warning, adjust your plans to avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day. Make sure your car has at least half a tank of gas, and update your winter survival kit.
Extreme Cold Warning: Take Action! An Extreme Cold Warning is issued when dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values are expected or occurring. Avoid going outside if you are in an area with an Extreme Cold Warning. If you have to go outside, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and make sure at least one other person knows your whereabouts. Update them when you arrive safely at your destination.
