(KNSI) – A new report shows the cost of lighting up in Minnesota can hurt your pocketbook as well as your health.

The personal finance website WalletHub studied the real cost of smoking state by State, with Minnesota coming in at number seven overall. WalletHub calculated losses brought on by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. The metrics included the lifetime and annual costs of a pack of cigarettes per day, health care expenditures, income losses and other costs.

The Land of 10,000 Lakes was seventh in the nation for out-of-pocket cost per smoker, seventh for financial opportunity lost, 14th for income loss per smoker and 17th for healthcare cost per smoker.

According to the website, smoking costs us more than $600 billion per year. It’s estimated there are 46 million tobacco users in the U.S.
