(KNSI) – Two St. John’s Prep students received the prestigious Triple A Award from the Minnesota State High School League Wednesday in Paynesville.
Seniors Sylvie Bechtold and Michael DeMars were selected for the Academics, Arts and Athletics recognition. It is meant to honor those who are excelling in a wide range of interests in the classroom, on the field, and in the studio.
Bechtold participates in three sports, including being a captain for the cross country and basketball squads. She is a National Honor Society member and helps as a writing tutor. Additionally, Bechtold likes to draw and paint, and dabbles in graphics work. She hopes to go to Med School and wants to find an undergraduate degree that allows her to combine art and science.
DeMars captains the soccer and basketball teams. He specializes in ceramics, which he feels gives him a chance to put a lot of creativity into each piece. DeMars plans on going to college for engineering and says his love of arts enhances his skills in STEM.
Both were selected for the Section 5A awards. They will be considered along with peers from their region. Two applications will then be chosen for the state banquet. The MSHSL eventually will pick two Triple A winners from across the state for a scholarship.
