(KNSI) – Introduce a kid to the great outdoors during Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend.

Any adult resident can wet a line without a license on Saturday through Monday as long as they take a youngster. Minnesotans age 15 or younger don’t need fishing licenses to fish. Volunteer mentor program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Benji Kohn says, “Ice fishing is lots of fun and this weekend is a great time to share the experience with a kid in your life.”

Additionally, the fishing season for stream trout in lakes outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness opens on Saturday.

Ice fishing isn’t the only way to have fun over the weekend. The Minnesota DNR is waiving vehicle permit fees at all 73 state parks and recreation areas on Monday during Free Park Day. People can take part in winter activities such as birding, hiking, nature photography, and having a campfire with hot chocolate and s’mores.
