(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is ready to show off the frosty side of state parks on January 20th.

The agency will host its first of four free park days for 2025, with an emphasis on bringing visitors outside at a time that they might typically overlook. DNR Parks and Trails Division Director Ann Pierce says, “While Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are open 365 days per year, most visits occur in the summer. Minnesota state parks truly shine year-round, and winter is a special time to embrace the state’s natural beauty and recreational opportunities; so we’re hoping people will come out and join us on Jan. 20.”

There is one free park day per season. The rest of the 2025 dates are April 26th, June 14th, and November 28th for spring, summer, and fall. DNR staff are hoping that snow sticks around so visitors can ski, sled, or snowshoe. Even in places where the ground is bare can get in the fun with hiking, birdwatching, or a cozy campfire with s’mores.

For Free Park Day, vehicle entrance fees are waived at all 73 parks and recreation areas. Equipment will be available to rent at many spots. Just make sure to come dressed in clothing that is appropriate for the weather. Early forecasts are for a high temperature in the low single digits.
