(KNSI) — New data released Thursday by the Minnesota Department of Health reveals a surge in hospital admissions for COVID-19, RSV, and the flu.

The flu-related hospitalizations, in particular, have risen dramatically. In the last full week of December, flu-related admissions skyrocketed by approximately 150%. Nearly 600 flu-related hospitalizations were reported during that week. That’s more than double last year’s weekly peak of 282. Preliminary data for the week ending January 4th indicates 722 influenza hospitalizations, with figures typically revised upward as additional reports come in. The increase has put the state into the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s high flu activity category, joining 16 other states in the undesirable distinction. It was in the low activity classification the week before.

Although flu hospitalizations currently outnumber those for COVID-19, the latter is also on the rise. RSV-related hospitalizations, which primarily affect infants, toddlers, and older adults, have also increased. The state recorded 126 RSV admissions in the last week of December, though this figure remains below last year’s peak of 215.

The CDC says having good handwashing practices is key to help avoid getting sick. Also, staying away from those who are sick, staying home if you’re sick, covering coughs and sneezes and avoiding face touching. That includes rubbing your eyes and nose and putting your fingers in your mouth.
