(KNSI)—Central Minnesota is being bitten by the flu bug, which means wait times at emergency rooms and urgent care clinics are shooting higher.
CentraCare says before you head to a busy waiting room, remember these common-sense tips for dealing with wintertime respiratory viruses. Most people reach the height of contagiousness three to five days after they first realize they’re sick. Symptoms will last for days, even into a second week, while the body bounces back. That is not a sign that additional treatment is needed.
Viruses cannot be treated using antibiotics. Any aches or pains, from a sore throat to stiffness and fever, should be managed with ibuprofen. The only times to seek immediate care are for people struggling to breathe, if diarrhea or vomiting makes it impossible to stay hydrated, or when a high fever can’t be brought down by over-the-counter medication.
CentraCare is also reminding the sick that it offers urgent care and clinic visits virtually using telemedicine.
