(KNSI) – Stearns County says its new justice center will be located on the extreme western end of St. Cloud, amid a flurry of details about the facility released Tuesday.

The reveal occurred during a work session of the county commissioners. Now that the schematic design phase is over, roughly 90% of the preparation work has been completed. Plans call for a center over 510,000 square feet with the price tag just a hair below $320 million.

The complex will be constructed at the corner of County Highway 75 and County Road 134. It will sprawl across 68 acres, with a 10-acre wetland providing a natural buffer for the property. The center is expected to hold the jail, sheriff’s office, county attorney offices, and courthouse.

The jail would be two stories, but the cells would be on the ground floor. The sheriff’s office is also expected to be two levels and will feature a significant amount of training space.

The other half of the facility would be a five-floor tower. It includes offices and 11 courtrooms. Seven would be for jury trials, and the other four would be for nonjury trials.

Completion of the project is still years away.
