(KNSI) – With furnaces running at full capacity during this latest cold snap, the Sartell Police and Fire Department are warning of a silent killer.
Officials want residents to be on the lookout for signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. The orderless, colorless gas results from incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, propane, and wood.
The fire department recommends that homeowners install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of a house, place them within 10 feet of bedrooms and test them monthly. They should also have a home’s heating source checked by a professional each year and make sure snow, ice, and other debris aren’t obstructing the furnace or dryer vent.
The symptoms of CO poisoning include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If anyone experiences these symptoms, get fresh air immediately and call 911.
