(KNSI) – The year 2024 will go down as the warmest ever for both the Twin Cities region and St. Cloud.

The National Weather Service put out the final update Wednesday, showing the average mean temperature locally at 48.3 degrees. The previous high mark was set in 1931 at 47.9 degrees. Minneapolis and St. Paul beat their prior record, set in 2012, by only a tenth of a degree.

We got to the record in a unique way, with warm overnight temperatures fueling the push. St. Cloud had 24 days above 90 degrees in 2023 versus only six in 2024. Even though summertime temperatures did not stand out, last winter and the fall were both scorching hot. That trend was seen across the Upper Midwest.

This year is off to a very different start. Temps are expected to be seasonably cold through the weekend, with dramatically below average readings predicted for next week.
