(KNSI) – Minnesota politicians are paying tribute to former president Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday.

Carter was commander-in-chief for one term from 1977 to 1981 before losing to Republican Ronald Reagan in his reelection campaign. He also was a Georgia state senator and governor. Carter would go on to be remembered for his charitable activities, particularly with Habitat for Humanity.

Within hours of the announcement of Carter’s death at age 100, Governor Tim Walz proclaimed that the American flag and the Minnesota flag would fly at half-staff at all government buildings from sunrise on Monday, December 30th, through sunset on January 29th, 2025.

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released a statement, reflecting on her personal relationship with Carter. “I was lucky enough to share several wonderful memories with President Carter in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. We prayed together at Maranatha Baptist Church, I watched him teach Sunday school, and we shared pimento cheese sandwiches. Each time, his profound faith was clearly on display.

“As President Carter reunites with his beloved wife Rosalynn, we should recognize his passing for what it is – the culmination of a life well lived. He will be remembered not as a politician, but as an unrelenting force for good.”

Rosalynn Carter died a little over a year ago, on November 19th, 2023, at 96 years old.
