(KNSI) – Senator Amy Klobuchar is celebrating the passage of a bill that will crack down on college hazing.
Klobuchar was a sponsor of the Stop Campus Hazing Act. It requires schools to include hazing incidents in their annual safety reports. They are also forced to create a campus-wide program to educate students about hazing and its consequences.
All student organizations operating at a college will need to disclose to parents and students about any hazing incidents that have happened in their history. The law was bipartisan, sponsored by both Democrats and Republicans in the United States House of Representatives and Senate.
Klobuchar says, “After years of effort from parents, students, advocates and lawmakers, our bipartisan legislation to improve hazing prevention efforts on college campuses has now been signed into law, and I’ll keep working to stop this abuse and keep students safe.”
Minnesota parents Tom and Mary Pat Santulli helped advocate for the bill after their son died from a hazing incident. “As the parents of Danny Santulli, my wife and I are ecstatic for the Stop Campus Hazing Act. This bill will save lives. If my wife or I had known of the many sanctions that were against the fraternity that Danny was pledging, we would have never allowed him to pledge that fraternity. Parents and incoming students have the right to know the background of any organization they are going to join.”
