(KNSI) – The stomach flu is raging statewide at about twice the normal rate.
The Minnesota Department of Health is warning that there have been over 40 norovirus outbreaks this month. It is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea, often occurring in foodborne illness. The typical person gets sick from norovirus five times during their life.
Hand washing and proper food preparation are two keys to staying healthy. MDH recommends scrubbing your hands with soap for 20 seconds and stresses that sanitizer will not kill noroviruses. Don’t let someone who has been recently vomiting or suffering from diarrhea prepare a meal. Lastly, the agency says any surface exposed to vomit or diarrhea needs to be cleaned with bleach immediately.
For the average person, a bout with norovirus lasts for one to two days.
