(KNSI) — Sauk Rapids and the Sauk Rapids-Rice School District have agreed to a land swap involving roughly ten acres of city-owned land in Mayhew Creek Park and about 17.5 acres of undeveloped school district land adjacent to the park.
Pending voter approval next year, the district plans to build a new 60,000-square-foot early childhood education center on the land. The city says it will preserve its portion for future parks and recreational opportunities.
Both the city and the school district have determined the land exchange to be of equal value.
“We appreciate the city’s willingness to collaborate on this project,” said Bradley D. Bergstrom, Superintendent of Schools. “A new early childhood education center would be a vital resource for our families and help us meet our community’s growing early childhood needs.”
Mayor Kurt Hunstiger says the city is “excited about this opportunity to work together for the benefit of our community. This land swap represents our commitment to providing quality educational facilities and recreational spaces for all residents.”
