(KNSI) — Three local students have received letters of recommendation to attend military service academies.
Cheyanne Nyholm of Kimball, Ellie Gertken of Richmond, and Hailey Ruhoff of Paynesville were all nominated by Representative Michelle Fischbach (R, CD7). Members of Congress may nominate up to ten candidates to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.
Students must apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a member of Congress. Other nomination sources include the president and vice president.
Attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for at least five years upon graduation.
