(KNSI) – Even wickedly cold temps that felt like 20-below couldn’t slow down this year’s Jolly Trolley Food Drive.
The bus was parked outside area grocery stores last week for two hours in the evening from Monday through Thursday. Metro Bus says the total came to $1,851 and 9,766 pounds of food. Local food shelves will stretch the money to bring in roughly five times as much as what the average consumer can purchase for themselves at a grocery store.
The numbers were down compared to last year’s record haul, but the weather was a huge cause. On Wednesday, only 17 pounds of food and under $200 were collected.
The donations come at a time when people are turning to food shelves at a record pace. In 2023, there were over 7.5 million visits to facilities statewide, shattering the previous year’s record by 1.8 million visits.
