(KNSI) – A Becker Girl Scout has been given the organization’s highest achievement for helping introduce young ladies to robotics.
Maykala Hoefs has been recognized with the Gold Award for her “Coding for Cookies” project, which has helped nearly 50 scouts earn their robotics badges. The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes those demonstrating extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable projects.
Her idea introduces science, technology, engineering, and mathematical concepts to young scouts who use them to operate robots. In November, Hoefs and members of the Becker High School Robotics Team took Girl Scouts in grades K-12 on a tour of their facility and taught them about different classes of robotics.
The program is expanding to other councils in Minnesota and nationwide. Hoefs hopes the session inspires girls to pursue a career in a STEM profession.
