(KNSI) – Residents and business owners are voicing concerns over a $6.8 million road and sewer project in the Pantown neighborhood.

The St. Cloud City Council gave the work the go-ahead after a public hearing where six people expressed their uneasiness about how much it will cost property owners and resistance to sidewalks in the area. Michael Sakry owns Sok’s Rapid Car Wash at 2550 7th Street North and told KNSI News he knows the road is in bad shape but says the bill could be devastating. “I’m feeling that the project probably needs to get done, or portions of it, but the biggest concern I have is a bill for $80,000 for a small, family owned business. Just a small business, $80,000. That’s a huge hit.”

Landowners will pay for 28.5% of the work, and the city will cover the rest. They city does allow property owners to finance the work at 5% for up to 20 years.

Sakry also questions the placement of the sidewalk. “They’re talking about putting sidewalk on the south side of the road, when the residents are all on the north side of the road. Which makes no sense to me.”

Bids will go out after the first of the year, and work should start in the spring.
