(KNSI) — New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tischfatal called the fatal Wednesday morning shooting of Minnesota-based UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson a brazen, targeted attack.

A masked man reportedly approached 50-year-old Thompson around 7:00 a.m. Eastern near a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan and shot him several times before fleeing the scene on foot and then on a bicycle. Thompson was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Thompson was in New York City to speak at an investor conference. UnitedHealthcare is part of UnitedHealth Group, which is headquartered in Minnetonka.

Officials say they will not rest until the suspect is in custody and are offering a $10,000 reward.

After hearing the news, Governor Tim Walz took to his X account, calling it “horrifying” and adding it is a “terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota.”
