(KNSI) – About half of the St. Cloud area is now out of drought entirely.
Wednesday’s report shows that all of Sherburne County, plus about a third of Benton County and 14% of Stearns County, are back to normal soil moisture. The dividing line cuts right through St. Cloud on a diagonal from southwest to northeast.
Rice and Sauk Rapids are still experiencing abnormally dry conditions. In Stearns County, it includes Avon, Cold Spring, Melrose, Sauk Centre, and Sartell, among others. This means lake and river levels are low, and fire danger is elevated.
It becomes difficult to make up ground in the winter as ice forms and the ground freezes. An arctic blast will keep temperatures below 20 degrees from Friday through Monday, December 2nd. The cold air also means less precipitation. It switches from rain to snow, where the general rule of thumb is that 10 inches of the white stuff is equivalent to about an inch of water.
