(KNSI) – Construction crews have located an unexpected granite deposit at the new Cold Spring Fire Hall site.

Nate Bell of Donlar Construction told the city council at the last meeting that the discovery came when putting in the footings, parts of a building’s foundation designed to distribute weight across a wide portion of ground so the building doesn’t sink. He said the only solution is to blast the bedrock and remove it. The estimated cost of taking out the bedrock is $89,606. The council approved a measure 4-0, okaying the work.

The blasting is scheduled for Monday afternoon at 2:00. Crews will do set up beforehand and expect the 100 block of Main Street to be closed for only ten minutes once they actually get going. Administrator Kris Dockendorf wants residents to know that Alexander Park will also be affected, namely the playground and splash pad area.

Built into the budget for the project is a contingency of $557,000 to be used up on unexpected costs, so the project is still on schedule and remains on target financially.
