(KNSI) — For those willing to bundle up and brave the cold, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is offering a Free Park Day on Friday.

The day is one of four each year where those without a state park sticker can check out all 73 state parks and recreation areas at no cost. It’s aimed at encouraging people to embrace the outdoors and wellness benefits of spending time in nature. Research highlights the mental and physical health benefits of being outdoors, including reduced stress and improved focus, as the American Psychological Association noted.

“During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are the perfect places to enjoy the tranquility of nature,” said Ann Pierce, director of the DNR Parks and Trails Division. “We encourage people to get outside with friends and family after Thanksgiving gatherings to enjoy the calming sights and sounds of nature. With cooler weather, quieter trails, and unique wildlife activity, visitors can experience Minnesota state parks and recreation areas in a new light.”

The DNR says there’s plenty to enjoy this time of year, from hiking and biking to birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Without foliage, scenic views open up, and spotting deer, foxes, and waterfowl becomes easier.

The DNR has a page for each state park, with directions and updates, for those who don’t regularly visit and may need to be more familiar with what they have to offer. Click here to learn more.

Use the Avenza app to access free geoPDF maps that show locations, even offline. Click here to learn more.

Paper maps are also available at park entrances.

Be prepared for the elements by checking the weather ahead of time, dressing appropriately for the conditions, and bringing water and snacks for hydration and energy.
