(KNSI) — Whether going over the river and through the woods or flying to your Thanksgiving destination, AAA warns travelers to expect record-breaking crowds.
An estimated 79.9 million people nationwide are forecasted to be going more than 50 miles from home. That’s 1.7 million more than last year and two million more than 2019. AAA’s public affairs spokesperson, Brynna Knapp, breaks it down. “We’ve forecasted 71.7 million folks driving around the country, and then 5.8 million Americans will be flying to their destinations. And then an interesting fact for you: 2.3 million are traveling by boat, train or bus. And that’s almost a 19% increase from last year.”
Likely leading the charge according to Knapp is lower gas prices. Last year at this time, the national average was $3.26 for a gallon of regular unleaded. As of Monday morning, it’s about $3.05. For those staying in Minnesota, it’s even cheaper at $2.85.
Knapp tells KNSI News says some are skipping the traditional Thanksgiving trip for pleasure travel. “Our top destinations are typically warm weather destinations. So yes, the Caribbean, and then you know, places like California, Florida; folks are flocking to get a warm weather weekend over the Thanksgiving holiday.”
Travel experts say the busiest times on the road will be Wednesday and Sunday afternoon. For those flying somewhere, Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport officials say they expect a 10% boost in travelers compared to last Thanksgiving. An estimated 50,000 people are forecast to pass through security on the busier days.
