(KNSI) – Monday’s record daily rainfall in the area dramatically lessened the drought in central Minnesota.
All of Benton, Sherburne, and Stearns Counties have improved to moderately dry conditions. Last week, over 99% of Benton County was in moderate drought as was almost 71% of Stearns.
The figures should only improve as we got another .45″ of rain on Tuesday after the soil readings were taken. Wednesday, which was mostly a snow event, saw the equivalent of .06″ of liquid fall from the sky. The forecast does not expect any major precipitation events for the rest of the week.
The statewide map shows severe drought is down to 15.66% of Minnesota. It is corralled to an area stretching Northeast from the corner of Otter Tail County up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the northern portion of Lake and Cook Counties.
Moderate drought is hanging tough, consisting of about half of the state. It swirls from the Arrowhead over to the border with the Dakotas and down to the extreme southern edge of the state. A square block that includes Alexandria, Mankato, New Ulm, St. Cloud, and the Twin Cities metro area has receded to moderately dry conditions.
