(KNSI) – Winter Weather Awareness Week began today with a theme of ‘Winter Storms.’
Meteorologist Eric Ahasic urges people to use all of the technology at their disposal to stay up-to-date on when the snow might fly. Storms no longer sneak up on us. “You might hear about, ‘Oh, the winter storm next week, the snow next week.’ You might hear about that a week, maybe even 10 days ahead of time, right? You can kind of see them coming.”
By keeping up with the preliminary forecasts, you can avoid deadly situations once the storm arrives. Ahasic says, “Once it starts snowing, it’s really, really hard to change those plans, especially if you have somewhere to be out on the roads.”
Ahasic suggests checking your calendar and seeing if you have a hockey tournament to attend or are going to Grandma’s house for dinner during the worst of a predicted storm. He recommends changing your itinerary to get to your destination a day earlier, if possible. Ahasic says the track and severity of the storm won’t be locked down early in the forecast period, but it gives you enough information to prepare.
Winter Weather Awareness Week runs through the 22nd. Please continue to check this website each day for more information on the planned themes.
