(KNSI) — Minnesota State Representative Lisa Demuth has been elected as House Speaker-Designate.
Representative Demuth (R-Cold Spring) formerly served as House Minority Leader and said of her new role, “It is an honor to earn the continued trust of my Republican colleagues in the Minnesota House to serve as our caucus leader as we navigate this historic session.” On Election Night, the unofficial vote totals showed a 67-67 tie between Democrats and Republicans. The state hadn’t seen a situation like this since 1978, when the Republicans got the speakership and the DFL had control of the spending committees.
Demuth added the GOP’s goal remains clear. “To ensure Minnesota families can thrive with lower taxes, safer communities, and greater opportunities for growth.”
House Republicans also elected Representative Harry Niska (R-Ramsey) as Deputy Republican Leader.
House Republicans say they look forward to a productive session as they work with their colleagues across the aisle to benefit Minnesotans. The 2025-2026 session gavels in on January 14th.
