(KNSI) – A generous grant and local donations will allow the Benton County Sheriff’s Office to add a new K9 partner.

On Tuesday, the department learned it had been awarded a $16,000 grant from the Central Minnesota K9 Foundation. The sheriff’s office also raised around $5,000, for a grand total of $21,000. The sheriff’s office started asking for donations in September.

A press release says K9 officers play a vital role in searching for missing people, detecting illegal drugs, locating crime scene evidence, and tracking down suspects. The office has been without one since April when K9 Ragnar retired after seven years of service.

The new K9 and its handler should be trained and ready to hit the streets next year.
