(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is expecting a big year for rifle hunters this fall, and early returns from the archery season suggest that is possible.
The DNR’s deer report website shows that 23,089 deer had been harvested with a bow as of early Monday. That is nearly equal to what was bagged last year, with almost two months left to go. It is looking likely that this year’s haul will be in second place for the past 15 years, behind only 2020. That was defined by the COVID-19 pandemic when economic shutdowns and other disruptions made it easier for people to find time outdoors.
Firearms season starts Saturday. It runs between nine and 16 days depending on which zone you are in.
Last month, the DNR said the 400,000 firearms hunters who have applied for a license will do well everywhere except for the northeastern part of Minnesota. The agency cites past severe winters as a factor there. They said last year’s record-warm season helps but doesn’t offset the cold and heavy snow that has walloped that region lately.
