(KNSI) — For trick or treaters brave enough to hit the streets tonight, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office offers tips to keep pedestrians and drivers safe.

Officials say to be safe, it’s important to be seen.

Wear reflective tape on costumes, attach glow sticks to trick or treat bags or carry a flashlight to be visible to drivers. Watch for cars turning or backing up, and before crossing the street, look left, look right and look left again. Cross at corners, use traffic signals and crosswalks and use the sidewalk.

Drivers also need to slow down, be especially alert, be on the lookout for pedestrians, such as kids crossing mid-block, and put away distractions.

According to Safe Kids, on average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
