(KNSI) – A 60-year-old South Haven woman is dead after she hit a deer on Interstate 94 early Sunday morning.
The Minnesota State Patrol says Julie Terwey was heading east on 94 just before 5:30 when she hit a deer. Her Ford Escape was stopped in the center lane following the crash and was rear-ended by a 32-year-old man from Becker. He was taken to the hospital. Terwey was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety, deer-vehicle crashes peak in the fall, but the large deer population makes them a safety hazard on the road all year long. According to the latest data, from 2016 to 2020, 6,218 deer crashes were reported to the Department of Public Safety, resulting in 18 deaths.
