(KNSI) – A recently completed project is making controlling water levels on a lake near Grey Eagle easier.

The Sauk River Watershed District and the Little Birch Lake Association teamed up to install rock arch rapids at the lake’s outlet. Work on the rapids began on September 24th and was completed ten days later. About 90 percent of the work was paid for through the Lessard Sams Outdoor Heritage Fund and a $15,000 donation from the LBLA.

The new installation will control the water levels and help the local fish population. The system consists of large boulders in a stream or river that gradually steps down the water level while keeping a stable level upstream. It’s meant to mimic natural stones in the stream and create riffles, allowing fish and wildlife to move easily up and downstream. The project has been in the making for nearly two years.

The stone arch replaced a weir built in 1988 that had created concerns over its concrete berm eroding.
