(KNSI) – Eighty-five of Minnesota’s 87 counties are under a red flag warning for Thursday.

A red flag warning means fires can spread quickly and easily burn out of control under the predicted weather conditions.

Dry air and strong winds are creating critical fire weather conditions across Minnesota today. Relative humidity levels will drop as low as 15% to 25%, and winds from the south will increase to 20 to 25 miles an hour, with gusts reaching up to 35 to 45 miles an hour. These factors could lead to rapid fire spread throughout the state.

The Department of Natural Resources says it will not issue or activate any open burning permits and campfires are strongly discouraged.

The warning is in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
