(KNSI) – A Colorado man will get eight years in federal prison for targeting elderly victims through a magazine subscription fraud scheme.
It is estimated that $300 million was stolen from 150,000 victims nationwide. Amondo Antoine Miller is based in Littleton, Colorado and worked with several co-conspirators. The group would call people who had a current subscription and offer them a renewal at a lower rate.
That was a ruse, allowing them to trick the victims into signing up for an entirely new set of subscriptions that totaled an exorbitant amount. Some wound up being billed by as many as ten different magazines totaling $1,000 per month in charges.
The 48-year-old was tried and convicted by a jury in November 2023 on charges including conspiracy to commit mail fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud. Miller was sentenced Thursday.
The United States Attorney’s office says it was the first time someone was convicted in Minnesota using the Senior Citizens Against Marketing Scams Act of 1994.
