(KNSI) – A small plane made an emergency landing about four miles west of Pierz on Monday afternoon, but the pilot escaped without injury.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office says 53-year-old Aaron Casper of Eden Prairie was heading home from Brainerd when he lost engine power. The aircraft quickly descended from about 3,500 feet of altitude, and Casper was forced to touch down on Highway 27 near the Eastern Morrison County Sportsman Club.

Casper was able to steer the plane into the roadside ditch to avoid any traffic. The sheriff’s office was helped at the scene by the Pierz fire and police departments and the Minnesota State Patrol.

The accident happened at about 1:20 p.m. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
