(KNSI) – The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State was evacuated Friday afternoon due to a suspicious package.

An investigation is underway, being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Minnesota State Patrol. The parcel was addressed to the general office with a return envelope labeled the United States Traitor Elimination Army.

Simon was defiant in the wake of the incident. “Threatening election officials is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. Our democracy depends on public servants who must be able to perform their duties free from fear, intimidation, or harassment. This action is not deterring our work or determination to deliver another election that is free, fair, accurate, and secure. We will work with our law enforcement partners to ensure the person or persons responsible for this action are held accountable.”

The Associated Press reports that six state election offices were sent suspicious packages on Monday, September 16th. The packages contained a powder that was tested and deemed harmless. The states affected included Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Tennessee, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. Kansas’s attorney general was also targeted.

All six states targeted earlier this month went for Republican candidate Donald Trump in the last election. Minnesota opted for current President Joe Biden in 2020.
