(KNSI) – The challenges of caring for someone with dementia hit the silver screen in central Minnesota, starting this week.

The first movie will screen on Thursday at Love of Christ Church at 1971 Pine Cone Road South. The event begins at 5:00 p.m. A social hour will allow attendees to learn more about local resources available for caregivers and their families. There will also be refreshments provided.

The lights darken at 6:00 to show the film, “Dick Johnson is Dead.” The movie is a dark comedy. The main character is Kristen Johnson, whose father Richard has dementia. Kristen and Richard act out skits involving imaginative ways his death could play out. It stresses the anticipation of grief for caregivers who know that a loved one or friend is going to die soon.

The series consists of three films. “Little Empty Boxes” will also be shown at Love of Christ Church on October 17th. In late November, “Wine, Women & Dementia” will be screened at Baby’s On Broadway in downtown St. Cloud.

Greater St. Cloud Dementia Friends Community is presenting the movies. If you can’t make it in person, you can watch online via Zoom. Respite care is provided on site if you bring your loved one.
