(KNSI) – College students will remember the sacrifice of first responders on one of America’s darkest days.

The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Fighting Saints Battalion will host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb starting at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Husky Stadium on the St. Cloud State University campus. The unit is made up of ROTC Students from SCSU, Saint John’s University and the College of Saint Benedict.

Some climbers will take on the full 2,071 stairs, representing the number of steps in the World Trade Center tower stairwell. Others will do a portion. The event is open to everybody, including clubs, organizations, teams, families, co-workers and community members. Participants can meet at Husky Stadium’s front gate for check-in and brief opening remarks.

SCSU’s Veterans Resource Center will host a Patriot Day flag-raising and short ceremony starting at 7:45 a.m. in front of the administrative services building. As part of the tribute, there will be a 21-gun salute at 7:46 a.m. The city of St. Cloud is also holding a remembrance ceremony at city hall at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Wednesday is the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, where four planes were highjacked and crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennslyvania, after passengers fought back and attempted to retake the plane. It’s believed the airliner was headed for the U.S. Capitol. The attack led to 2,996 deaths that day.
