(KNSI) — Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools announced it is partnering with the City of Sauk Rapids to develop two new practice fields at Mayhew Creek Park, just north of the high school.

In a press release, Superintendent Brad Bergstrom highlighted the significance of the project, saying it will create two additional fields that are “much needed for the school district and community. While there is practice space at the high school, drainage issues often render these spaces unusable when it rains. Now there will be accessible fields for soccer and lacrosse practice as well as for community use even when the weather is a challenge”

The total construction cost is estimated at $1.6 million, which will be shared between the City of Sauk Rapids and the school district. The district will oversee the maintenance of the fields.

Bergstrom said he appreciated the collaboration, which he called a “great example of what can be accomplished when the City of Sauk Rapids and Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools partner to address the needs of the school and greater community. This project addresses city and district needs while cost-effectively maximizing taxpayer dollars.” He added he is grateful for the discussions with the City leading up to the project’s announcement and “the City leaders for their willingness to come together on this joint venture. This does not happen everywhere.”

Construction of the fields is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025 and be completed in the spring of 2026.
