(KNSI) – St. Cloud residents will have a chance to mark the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. this Wednesday.

Mayor Dave Kleis will host the somber event at 5:00 p.m. at city hall. The Day of Remembrance will pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims.

Four airliners were hijacked early that morning. Two were flown into the upper levels of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan. Another hit the Pentagon. The fourth, believed to be en route to the U.S. Capitol, crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, when passengers retook the plane from the terrorists.

Signs of remembrance will be visible at other area locations. September 11th is now recognized as Patriot Day, and flags are set to fly at half-staff.

Another option is to visit the 9/11 memorial in Rockville. It features a portion of one of the steel beams recovered from the World Trade Center’s wreckage. The 988-pound piece was part of a program run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that sent artifacts from the 9/11 attacks across the country.
