(KNSI) – A U.S. House of Representatives committee wants Minnesota officials to turn over documents related to the Feeding Our Future pandemic fraud scandal.

On Wednesday, the House Education and Workforce Committee issued subpoenas to Governor Tim Walz, Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Willie Jett and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The committee is probing the oversight of the Feeding Our Future nonprofit after 70 people were accused of stealing $250 million from a pandemic-era nutrition program. It’s been called the largest COVID-related fraud scheme in the country. So far, a jury convicted five defendants earlier this year, and 18 others have pleaded guilty.

Despite ongoing trials and convictions, questions remain about oversight and accountability. Scammers set up false food distribution sites and falsified documents to get reimbursed for meals they never served.

The MDE was responsible for administrating the program in Minnesota, and an audit found the department’s lack of oversight created opportunities for fraud. When asked in June about accountability for government employees in charge of administering the program, Walz said no employee had done anything illegal.

The Walz administration has until September 18th to comply with the subpoena.
