(KNSI) – A collection of mostly local musical acts will take the stage for seven hours to deliver one of the most meaningful concerts of the year.

Tommy Vee says Rock for Alzheimer’s was born from his family’s experience caring for legendary musician Bobby Vee. Bobby was diagnosed in 2011 and passed away in October 2016. Tommy tells KNSI that the event is about more than just raising money.

“After being a caretaker for so long, you just get tired. And we thought, well, there’s other people going through this. Let’s put together a fundraiser that’s kind of a party, and encourage all the caretakers to come out.”

It’s an experience millions of Americans understand, including many of the performers. Vee adds, “Nobody gets paid to do this. These guys all donate their time. But everybody has their story. Everybody has a family member or somebody that they love that’s gone through this.”

Gates open at noon at Bad Habit Brewing in St. Joseph. This year’s lineup includes Michael Shynes and Clayton Ryan, plus local bands like Kat Blue and Collective Unconscious. The Killer Vees headline the show. Admission is a free-will donation.

All money raised goes to the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter and local music education programs. September is a busy month for the Alzheimer’s Association. St. Cloud will have its annual walk on the 21st at Lake George. The goal for that event this year is to raise $150,000.
