(KNSI) – The Twin Cities were hammered by two rounds of severe weather between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, leaving over a hundred thousand without power.
Xcel Energy says it has crews in the field making emergency repairs. After the first burst of heavy rain, hail, and sixty-plus mile-per-hour wind gusts, 87,000 customers were without power. The utility says it was able to restore juice to about 50,000 of those customers when even worse weather rumbled through.
It’s estimated that 150,000 customers were in the dark as of 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. Xcel had pre-staged about 700 employees and contractors in the area last night in anticipation of potentially damaging weather. That number should swell to around 1,700 by this afternoon in an effort to restore service as quickly as possible.
The current estimate for the power to be back for all customers is Thursday evening. Xcel guesses it will have fixed issues for around 75,000 customers by the end of the day today.
