(KNSI) — With the new school year about to begin, bus companies statewide say they are again struggling to find drivers.
St. Cloud-based Spanier Bus Service CEO Tami Spanier told KNSI News her company is in the same boat, but “people are coming in.”
She wants to get the new hires licensed as quickly as possible but adds they will still need three to four weeks of training before taking their commercial driver’s license exam. Until all the new drivers are caught up, Spanier herself will gladly jump into the driver’s seat. “I probably will be on a bus the first week or two until we get a few more people licensed. But you know what, the best part of my day is behind the wheel of that bus. I love being out with the kids, and so it’s not a chore. It’s not difficult for me because I like being with the kids.”
Anyone looking to be a school bus driver must have a clean driving record, a valid driver’s license and pass a physical.
