(KNSI) – Teens and young adults considering a career in law enforcement can learn about the profession firsthand.

The sheriff’s office is accepting applications for the award-winning Stearns County Explorer Program. They will learn to handle common scenarios seen on a call, report writing, defensive tactics, and arrest protocol. Explorers are taught CPR and first aid. They also learn what it is like to work in a jail setting.

Explorers volunteer to help at community events with security, first aid, and traffic control. They also get to participate in ride-alongs and sit-alongs with dispatchers.

The team meets weekly during the school year and periodically throughout the summer.

According to officials, the explorer program has existed since 1976 and has been successful at training and guiding youth toward a career in public safety.

Anyone between 15 and 21 years old who is interested should email SheriffExplorer@stearnscountymn.gov.
