(KNSI) – Four children between 11 and 14 years old were shot after allegedly taking a vehicle in north Minneapolis early Sunday.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara says five people inside a stolen Kia were driving in the 1700 block of Girard Avenue North. He says the stolen car was tailed by another vehicle when someone pumped at least 30 bullets into the Kia.

Three were not seriously injured, but one was hit in the head and had to be rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was listed in critical but stable condition. O’Hara says that car thefts are down by nearly 25% this year, but the crimes happening are more brazen.

O’Hara did not give a reason for why the riders in the stolen Kia were targeted. O’Hara says the city needs to do more to curb the activity. He said of the five car thieves, two had been picked up less than two weeks ago. According to O’Hara, having them turned back onto the streets without consequence is equivalent to failing them.

State law forbids anyone under 14 to be tried as an adult. They are automatically considered legally incapable of committing a crime.

The shooter has not yet been arrested.
