(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety has announced an increase in DWI patrols across the state through the Labor Day weekend.

The heightened enforcement, which starts Friday, has local law enforcement agencies, including the Minnesota State Patrol and county sheriffs, looking for drivers who appear impaired by alcohol, cannabis, prescription medications or other substances. In addition to the increased patrols, the DPS is also launching a public awareness campaign, utilizing social media, billboards, and radio ads to remind Minnesotans of the dangers of impaired driving.

Preliminary numbers show through August 11th, there were 64 alcohol-related traffic fatalities compared with 64 last year and 80 in 2022 at this same time.
