(KNSI) — A ceremonial groundbreaking is set for this afternoon for the Interstate 94 Gap Project between Monticello and Albertville.
Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and others will officially kick off the construction. The project received $78 million in funding, which will see the roadway go from two lanes to three in each direction. The goal is to improve the road surface, safety, and traffic flow by reducing bottlenecks and chokepoints.
Other funding came from $30 million in federal and state appropriations dollars and another $7 million from the Minnesota Department of Transportation District 3.
Major construction starts in 2025, but the freeway will remain open with two lanes in each direction as crews build the additional lanes on the other side. The work should wrap up in late 2026.
The project includes:
Adding a third westbound lane from Wright County Road 37 in Albertville to west of Highway 25 in Monticello
Adding a third eastbound lane from west of Highway 25 in Monticello to County Road 19 in Albertville
Replacing the westbound bridge over County Road 19 in Albertville
Widening the westbound bridge over County Road 75 in Monticello
Replacing or repairing underground drainage infrastructures
Installing two noise walls along I-94 in the Monticello area
