(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is making changes to the number of walleye you can catch on Lake Mille Lacs for the second half of the season.

The rules go into effect this Friday and last until November 30th. Fishery Section Manager Brad Parsons tells KNSI Radio that anglers will be able to take home two fish instead of one at a more convenient size of 18 to 20 inches.

“The 21 to 23-inch fish. You know, it’s nice if you can only keep one, you definitely get enough for a meal that way. But people, in general, prefer to eat smaller to medium-sized fish, and this fits in there.”

The rules so far in 2024 allowed for one walleye between 21 and 23 inches. Parsons talks about why the early season rules were so restrictive.

“We had a low forage population out there, low yellow perch, tulibee numbers for walleyes to eat. The good thing about that is it makes fishing really active. The tough thing about that is fish bite really well. We could very easily have approached our allocation sooner than we wanted to.”

Walleye is just one species anglers like to cast for on Lake Mille Lacs. Other options include northern pike and yellow perch.
